Now Online: the NCO Pipeline Video Conference

If you missed the NCO Community Engagement Pipeline Video Conference, watch it online. We've streamed the video conference to our Web site so you can see it at your convenience. Also on the site, you'll find informational resources to download and refer to as you watch.

We value your feedback about the video conference. Email your comments to sarah.bradley@ncoengage.org or download the feedback form from our site.

September Grant Opportunities

Three separate grant opportunities will be offered in September—each supporting a new film premiering in April 2008.

WGBH Boston and Twin Cities Public Television announced the next two films in the Take One Step: A PBS Health Campaign series. They are "The Truth about Cancer" (Production of WGBH) and "Depression: The Darkness Within" (w.t.) (Co-production of TPT and WGBH). In addition, WGBH will present "Caring for Your Parents," produced with special thanks to AARP.

New NCO Web Site Coming in October

Get ready for the October premiere of the new NCO Web Site. We're in the "home stretch" of building it; adding functions, streamlining others and making the site more valuable for you than ever. To introduce you to the site, we’ve scheduled a Webinar at two different times:

  • 2 – 3 p.m. E.S.T. Wednesday, Oct. 17
  • Noon – 1 p.m. E.S.T. Thursday, Oct. 25

Choose your time, mark your calendar and look for more details coming in next month's News Blast.

Great Idea: Innovative Engagement from WIPB

Here's a great example of community engagement created to accompany Ken Burns's THE WAR. On September 27, 2007, WIPB-TV and Ball State University will present Echoes of War: Stories from the Big Red One. A Web site and live broadcast originating from the First Division Museum at Cantigny in Wheaton, Illinois, will let participants interact with war veterans, university historians and museum curators. Visit www.bsu.edu/echoesofwar for details.

Out and About: NCO at DevCon

NCO will lead two workshops at the PBS Development Conference this fall:

  • 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 - "A variety of Engagement Opportunities: In the Community and at Stations," an opportunity to learn about noteworthy community engagement models.
  • 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5 - "Internet & Civic Life: Redefining How People Connect," an interactive presentation about the power of online initiatives.

To learn more visit the conference Web site.

WQED's StorySHARE: "Surviving the Bataan Death March"

In a recent submission to StorySHARE on WQED, Pepita Jimenez of Indiana, PA, recalled how "selfless little kindnesses of fellow marchers" helped her and her family get through a grueling ordeal during the Battle of the Philippines in 1942. Read this amazing story and explore hundreds of others at http://www.wqed.org/tv/war/story_share.php

NCO's overriding goal is to assist public broadcasting stations to provide meaningful community engagement locally, helping to foster new and deepen existing community partnerships.
